Overview

Levi Strauss & Co. uses Microsoft Foundry and GitHub Copilot to build purpose-driven AI agents that connect to enterprise systems such as SAP, HR platforms and retail systems, orchestrated through a planned unified 'Super Agent' experience inside Microsoft Teams. The company first rolled out Microsoft 365 Copilot enterprise-wide, then used Foundry as an orchestration layer with Azure Functions for backend execution, aiming to let employees get answers and complete tasks like checking inventory or initiating HR requests through a single natural-language interface.

The challenge

As Levi Strauss & Co. scales its direct-to-consumer business, employees navigated fragmented systems and complex workflows spread across multiple data sources, making it difficult to access insights and operate at the speed modern retail demands.

The solution

Levi Strauss & Co. first deployed Microsoft 365 Copilot enterprise-wide as a productivity tool, then expanded to using Microsoft Foundry to build purpose-driven agents that automate workflows and connect systems, pairing Foundry-built agents with GitHub Copilot to modernize engineering systems. Foundry serves as the orchestration layer across three foundational layers: agents that securely connect to enterprise systems such as SAP, HR platforms and retail systems using governed, identity-based access; specialized agents guided by structured prompts and reasoning workflows rather than a single generalized model; and a backend execution layer running on Azure Functions for scalable, event-driven processing. The company is introducing a unified 'Super Agent' experience within Microsoft Teams as a single entry point, orchestrating an ESS agent, a custom SAP agent and a Retail Agent spanning inventory, HR, finance and IT.
