University Hospital Freiburg evaluates open LLMs for drafting German clinical letters, with a tool partly in routine use in ophthalmology

Researchers at Universitätsklinikum Freiburg compared four language models for generating German medical letters (Arztbriefe), using 90,000 real clinical documents from the ophthalmology clinic. A non-commercial model gave the best results, and 93.1% of the reports generated with BLOOM-CLP-German were suitable for clinical use after minor corrections. The press release says the AI software is already partly in routine use at the university hospital; the ophthalmology clinic uses an AI tool for writing letters.
